Residents Meeting 17/12/03

The turn out for the meeting organised by the Ashburton and
surrounding area residents was excellent - certainly no less
than 75. Chairperson for the night was Jill Henderson-Long who
did an excellent job in controlling the agenda. After the introductions,
opening speeches where made by Lindsay Frost and Eddy Arram
on behalf of the residents and were duly answered by representatives
from the Council and Garvis (the developers). The passionate
response and questions put forward by the residents must surely
be recognized by the council that the local community is not
not going let this issue lay to rest.
The overall feeling was that the meeting was a tremendous success
and has certainly acted as a catalyst to mould the community
into serving a common goal. Although the councils response and
reasoning was plausible their answers were not enough to satisfy
the disappointment and frustration of the councils redevelopment
scheme. Peripheral issues pertaining to the main problem was
also brought up - such education, services and road/traffic
management
A motion was put forward at the end and unanimously passed.
A date for the next meeting is to be arranged probably early
in the new year. However, this is an important issue so please
do as was suggested and maintain pressure on the Council by
all individuals writing to as many different agencies as possible.
I strongly urge all those affected by this issue not to become
complacent and the solidarity displayed at this meeting must
be maintained. I understand that many residents not necessary
on the actual boundaries were also concerned about the "knock-on
effect" the redevelopment will have on them wanted to play
an active part with window posters, etc. - If they can contact
me by Email or by other means I will endeavour to sort something
out. Perhaps, if residents representatives can contact me so
we can collate information and work out a strategy that can
best serve the community as a whole.
Once again I would like to thank everyone who gave up their
time to attend the meeting. It is without doubt inspiring and
motivating to see you all and I hope that this does not put
to much of a damper on the one's Christmas! Hope to see you
all at the next meeting!!
